Based on published research from Eastern Canada, an established population of blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) was found to carry multiple tick-borne zoonotic pathogens simultaneously, including Lyme disease bacteria and Babesia species. The documented co-infections show that a single tick bite can transmit several pathogens, which may contribute to persistent symptoms and challenges in diagnosis and treatment, underlining the importance of comprehensive testing after tick exposure.
