Coxsackievirus
Coxsackievirus (obligate intracellular), belongs to Picornaviridae/enterovirus family, is a single-stranded RNA virus divided into group A and group B.
The Distribution and Disease of the Coxsackievirus
The Coxsackievirus is transmitted through contact with infected individuals or contaminated objects. It can also spread through droplet infection when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The infection is most common in the summer and fall.
Coxsackievirus infections can cause various diseases, including:
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD):
This common illness primarily affects children under ten years old. It is characterized by fever, sore throat, and a rash on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth.
Herpangina:
A condition that causes fever, sore throat, and small blisters in the mouth and throat.
Pleurodynia (Devil's Grip):
This rare but painful illness causes sudden, severe pain in the abdomen and chest.

Coxsackievirus A:

Coxsackievirus B:

Coxsackievirus A:
pericarditis progressing to heart failure, conjunctivitis, respiratory disease
Coxsackievirus B:
pericarditis progressing to heart failure, pleurodynia for one week (acute chest or abdominal pain with fever and headache, myalgia, joint pain), viral meningits, Insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM)
