HHV8-Virus
HHV-8 (Human Herpesvirus 8) is closely associated with Kaposi's sarcoma and primary effusion lymphoma.
Human Herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), is a DNA virus from the herpesvirus family that can infect both humans and primates. HHV-8 is primarily transmitted through the exchange of bodily fluids, including saliva, sexual contact, transfusions of contaminated blood, and vertical transmission from mother to child during childbirth. Risk factors for HHV-8 infection include unprotected sex and immunosuppression.
Diseases associated with HHV-8 include:
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS): A cancer that affects the skin, mucous membranes, and internal organs.
Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL): A lymphoma characterized by effusions in body cavities (e.g., pleura, pericardium, peritoneum).
Multicentric Castleman disease (MCD): A rare disorder of the lymphatic system caused by excessive proliferation of certain immune cells.
